Along the rocky coast of Mani, a mile from Limeni and just before you reach the fairy cave, there is an area that we locals call Demenico; I was born somewhere in this area, on one of these lonely rocks.
My name was given to me by my ancestors, shadowy rocks that cannot be seen in daylight except in the midday sun. The name, which must be Venetian, probably adapted by the locals, established by word of mouth, spanning centuries, to the time when the Venetian fleet besieged the land, never able to conquer it. Who knows, maybe it's the name of a ship that sank there, or the name of a beached ship of the Venetian Navy that gave this area its name.
My color... is black and white, washed out of the foam by the waves and absolute, like these , which have never been contaminated by foreign invaders; black next to white, placed in a unique way, separate from this land.
I am gone now, carried away by the sea; carved, my shape changed from a rough, wild and lonely rock to a smooth, accessible and pleasant one, although I will never forget my roots in Demenico.
