INSPIRED BY TOM DIXON MELT

Melt

Obsessed with creating an imperfect, organic and naturalistic lighting object, Melt was created in collaboration with Swedish design collective FRONT. Melt is associated with molten glass, the interior of a melting glacier or images of deep space. Melt is available in a series of pendant, chandelier, surface, floor and table lamps.

More about Melt

Obsessed with creating an imperfect, organic and naturalistic lighting object, Melt was created in collaboration with Swedish design collective FRONT. Melt is associated with molten glass, the interior of a melting glacier or images of deep space. Melt lights are created through a process of blow molding and vacuum metallization to produce molten spheres of abundant and extraordinary brightness. For several years, we worked with some of the pioneers of German engineering and manufacturing to develop these techniques and produce lamps that provide state-of-the-art reflectivity and transparency.

Using blow molding, a molten plastic polymer casting is injected into a massive, precision-made steel tool, inflated with compressed air, and then cooled. The mirror finish of each pendant is then created using a highly technical vacuum metallization process. A polycarbonate shell is secreted inside a metal chamber, air is sucked out, and a massive electrical charge is passed through it. With a bang and crackle, the thin strip of copper foil is vaporized into a fine mist of metal particles that settles on the interior. At Melt, we have taken vacuum thin film deposition to a new level with partially metallized surfaces, creating a remarkable optical effect that reflects and enhances its surroundings. This semi-reflective effect often seen on a smaller scale in trendy sunglasses or gangster windshields creates a hyper-reflective surface finish when turned off, but turns translucent when turned on.

Melt by Tom Dixon

An experiment gone horribly right, the Tom Dixon Melt Collection centers around technological tinkering in the advanced field of vacuum metallization. Designed by Tom Dixon himself, these visually stunning pieces provide enticing and ethereal lighting. Available in chrome, gold or copper with clear cord, the Melt collection enhances interiors and offers both an abstract and organic look. Lightology offers a wide range of Melt fixtures, in various sizes and finishes, suitable for any space. Cozy up in your favorite reading nook with a copper Melt table lamp, or take your kitchen island to the next level with matching Melt pendants. Browse our full collection of Tom Dixon Melt fixtures and warm not only your heart, but your home as well.

Melt pendant light

With the Melt pendant light, Tom Dixon distorts the message in a dramatic way. The British designer collaborated with avant-garde Swedish studio Front on this mesmerizing globe form that resembles melting blown glass. Light bounces and reflects off uneven surfaces when the translucent look is on. When turned off, the vacuum metallic coating creates a shiny mirror finish available in gold, chrome or copper.

Tom Dixon Melt LED Pendant Lamp

The Melt pendant lamp joins the British manufacturer's line of premium lamps that inspire with unusual designs and innovative lighting technologies. It has an almost magical brightness and resembles melting blown glass. In fact, the deformed ball of light is made of polycarbonate and has been produced using a vacuum process. The high-gloss polished surface gives the impression of a mirror reflection when turned off. When switched on, spectacular reflections and highlights are created as the light passes through the diffuser and immerses the room in fascinating ambient light. The Tom Dixon Melt LED pendant lamp is an attraction above the dining table, but will also decorate hotels and restaurants with its original shape and elegant color variations. The lamp with long-life LED module has a pendulum height of 250 cm and can be continuously dimmed.

Tom Dixon Melt LED pendant lamp

Melt is a light sphere with a beautiful irregular shape that creates a mesmerizing effect of melting blown glass. Melt's surface resembles the inside of a melting glacier or images of space. In 2019, we have added a custom Tom Dixon LED ring integrated into the base to the Melt family.
