Product description

The compact plastic LSR chair was a favorite of Charles and Ray Eames: they used this low model throughout the Eames House, their legendary home in Pacific Palisades, when needed and especially for entertaining conversations with guests. Unlike the LSR fiberglass chair, it can be used both indoors and outdoors. “To obtain the most of the best for the greatest number of people at the least cost”: these were the words Charles and Ray Eames described one of their main goals as furniture designers. None of their other designs come as close to achieving this ideal as the plastic chairs. For years, the designer pair explored the basic idea of a one-piece seat shell molded to fit the contours of the human body. After experiments with plywood and aluminum sheet in the 1940s gave unsatisfactory results, the search for alternative materials led them to fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin.
The Eames recognized and took full advantage of the material's advantages: formability, stiffness, pleasant tactile properties , suitability for industrial production methods. Thanks to this material, previously unknown in the furniture industry, shell designs for mass production were successfully developed. After debuting in the Museum of Modern Art's "Low Furniture Design" competition in 1948, the Plastic Chair (shell A) and the Plastic Side Chair (shell S) were introduced in 1950 as the first mass-produced plastic chairs in the history of furniture.
Eames plastic chairs also introduced a new typology of furniture that has since become common: the multi-functional chair whose shell can be combined with many different bases to serve different purposes. Already in 1950, Charles and Ray Eames presented a series of bases enabling various sitting positions. A particularly striking model is the so-called Eiffel Tower base - an intricate and graceful structure made of steel wire that uniquely combines light, elegant forms with structural strength.
Today, Vitra produces the comfortable seats of Eames plastic chairs in polypropylene, while the chairs Eames fiberglass products are manufactured from fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. There is also a wide selection of base and body colors, as well as upholstery options for some models. This allows customers to specify countless different combinations and use the chairs in the widest range of settings - from dining rooms, living rooms and home offices to office workspaces and meeting rooms; from restaurants and cafes to break rooms and cafes; from waiting rooms and auditoriums to terraces and gardens.
In 2016, Vitra added approximately 20 mm to the base height of the Eames DSX, DAX, DSR, DAR, DSW and DAW plastic chairs, while adapting the seat geometry.
