The K40 table is a squaring of the circle, quite literally. The circular crystal glass top rests on a curved steel tube, which in turn horizontally stiffens the square frame. There's no simpler way to build a table - and it couldn't be more convincing. The rounded corners of the horizontal supports reappear as thin steel guide loops.
Breuer designed the striking table in 1927/28 for the Berlin theater director Erwin Piscator, specifically for his private apartment. So not only on stage was the theater director a supporter of radical modernism, with authors such as Bertolt Brecht, Egon Erwin Kisch, Heinrich Mann and Erich Mühsam, and set designers such as Georg Grosz, John Heartfield and László Moholy-Nagy.
Also in life private Piscator has taken new paths, moving away from the heavy furniture of the past and towards a bright, airy atmosphere. The K40 coffee table fits this program perfectly. The Bauhaus Berlin Archive only approves original and licensed reissues of original Bauhaus Berlin models. They are marked with the signet ring of Oskar Schlemmer, which he designed for the State Bauhaus in Weimar in 1922. Even today, Bauhaus Tecta models are based exactly on the proportions of the originals.
