Product description

Uac is a padded, armless chair upholstered in a "wild silk" fabric called Sekphura. Sekhpura is a rough, durable silk fabric made from silk yarn spun from wild silkworms (rather than the more commonly available yarn from farmed silkworms). The yarn used in Sekhpura is wound (spun) using waste fibers left after spinning finer yarn called Tussah and Ghicha, which is usually used to make saris and garments. Therefore, Sekhpura is a recycled fabric, made from commercially produced yarn waste. Sekhpura yarn is entirely hand-spun and the fabric can only be produced by hand-weaving. The fabric has been rigorously tested for upholstery use and is reinforced with a backing to ensure its stability.
The wood finish has been specially created by us to match the fabric and is called Walnut (Z4). The walnut finish (Z4) is achieved by hand staining the wood with a water-based walnut stain and then hand applying a coat of sealer. As part of our research into handmade, natural Indian upholstery fabrics, we collaborated with textile company Zanav Home to adapt their fabrics to our upholstery. Several months of intensive experimentation and prototyping with Zanav fabrics led to the creation of a sub-collection of upholstered chairs from elements of our Chandigarh Project. The three chair models in this collection are made of carefully selected cotton, linen, silk and cotton-linen blends, created by Zanav in cooperation with communities of traditional weavers. The fabrics have been thoroughly tested for use and durability of the upholstery. Wood finishes have been specially developed to match selected fabrics.
