Product description

Uec is a limited edition armchair, padded and upholstered with a cotton and linen blend fabric called Andaman Slate. The fabric was woven in a simple Panama weave pattern and dyed slate black. The entire yarn production process - from winding, warping, denting, drawing to dyeing - is done manually. Of particular note is the vat dyeing process used to dye the yarn; the yarn is manually fed in and out of a vat containing dissolved dyes, which causes continuous reduction and oxidation deep into the fiber until the desired color is achieved. The yarn accepts the dye differently, resulting in a subtle color inconsistency that is a characteristic of all Zanav fabrics. The final fabric is woven on traditional looms, which are a relic of a bygone era.
The wood finish has been specially created by us to match the fabric and is called Charcoal (Z7). The Z7 finish is achieved by hand applying layers of black stain and sealer, then polishing with a steel brush to give the wood a textured finish. As part of our research into handmade, natural Indian upholstery fabrics, we worked with textile company Zanav Home to adapt their fabrics to our upholstery. Several months of intensive experimentation and prototyping with Zanav fabrics led to the creation of a sub-collection of upholstered chairs from elements of our Chandigarh Project. The three chair models in this collection are made of carefully selected cotton, linen, silk and cotton-linen blends, created by Zanav in cooperation with communities of traditional weavers. The fabrics have been thoroughly tested for use and durability of the upholstery. Wood finishes have been specially developed to match selected fabrics.
