Product description
Uec is an upholstered armchair with armrests available in three colors of Andaman fabric and three colors of Bompuka fabric.
Andaman is a cotton-linen blend fabric woven in a simple Panama weave. The entire process of winding, warping, denting, drawing and dyeing the yarn is done by hand. The fabric is dyed by a traditional and laborious vat dyeing process in which yarn is manually fed into and out of a vat containing dissolved dyes, causing continuous reduction and oxidation deep into the fiber until the desired color is achieved. The yarn accepts the dye differently, resulting in the subtle color inconsistency that is a characteristic of all vat-dyed fabrics. The final fabric is woven on traditional power looms, which are rarely used today.
Bompuka is a 100% cotton upholstery fabric designed by Belgian textile designer Fabienne Collet for Zanav. Like all Zanav fabrics, Bompuka is produced largely by hand, using almost extinct power looms to final weave the fabric. These old looms have limited pattern possibilities and, working from these limitations, Fabienne created a unique fabric by experimenting with the interplay of weave, color, light, etc. For example, twisting two differently colored vat-dyed yarns gives a light play to the dull cotton fiber and blurs the edges of a very small repeat geometric. Bompuka requires a high level of skill and craftsmanship; Consistently designing and producing it would not be possible if there were no hands and culture in the process.
The Easy upholstered armchair/Zanav collection can be ordered in two wood finishes - Stripped Black (Z3) and Walnut (Z4). Both finishes were developed by us especially for the Zanav collection. The Stripped Black (Z3) finish is achieved by spraying the wood with water-based black paint and then removing the black paint with a steel brush and sandpaper until black streaks remain only in the wood grain patterns. The walnut finish (Z4) is achieved by hand staining the wood with a water-based walnut stain and applying a coat of wood sealer. As part of our research into handmade, natural Indian upholstery fabrics, we collaborated with textile company Zanav Home to adapt their fabric for our upholstery. Several months of intensive experimentation and prototyping with Zanav fabrics led to the creation of a sub-collection of upholstered chairs from elements of our Chandigarh Project. The three chair models in this collection are made of carefully selected cotton, linen, silk and cotton-linen blends, created by Zanav in cooperation with communities of traditional weavers. The fabrics have been thoroughly tested for use and durability of the upholstery. Wood finishes have been specially developed to match selected fabrics.
