Kumiko designs are not chosen randomly: many of the nearly 200 models in use today have been in existence since the Edo period (1603-1868 ). Each pattern has a meaning or imitates a pattern found in nature, which is supposed to be a good omen.
Also in the case of Trame, the decorations have been reinterpreted to bring them back to new, contemporary languages.
