Inspired by Asplund

Michael and Thomas Asplund founded the Asplund Gallery to display furniture as art objects and vice versa. Initially, he was involved in the trade of works of art, but for a long time he thought about combining art and design in one company. In 1990, Thomas Asplund quit his job as a bank clerk to join forces with his brother. Thanks to their unconventional origins, the duo brought fresh ideas to the industry. Viewing furniture as art objects was a new way of thinking that quickly caught on. The Asplund Brothers asked Jonas Bohlin to design the original Asplund Gallery in Stockholm. Thanks to concrete floors and whitewashed walls, it was the quintessence of Scandinavian light. The gallery quickly became the stage for contemporary Swedish design. The exhibitions include works by artists such as Jonas Bohlin, John Kandell and Thomas Sandell. The Asplund brothers began developing their own line of furniture and design under the name EDITION ASPLUND. Among the first products released was a CD rack and a stool, both designed by Thomas Sandell. Launched under the name Wedding Stool, the stool was originally designed as a wedding gift for Jonas Bohlin and his fiancée.

In late 1995, Asplund outgrown its original location and moved into a larger premises. The choice fell on a showroom three times larger at Sibyllegatan 31. Sandra Adrian Asplund, Creative Director, joined the team in 1995 to define and develop different parts of the company - the name of the project SWECODE, short for the Swedish Contemporary Design Furniture fairs in Stockholm, Cologne and Milan with BOX, CBI, David Design and Forminord. The idea was to promote Swedish design more globally as a group. It was a success and all eyes were on Scandinavia.

Asplund's exhibitions and design collaborations feature works by renowned international designers such as Tom Dixon, David Mellor, Piero Lissoni, Ole Palsby, Jasper Morrisson, Marc Newson and the late James Irvine. next to contemporary Swedes. The Asplund Store, now a mix between a gallery, a store and a showroom, is considered a design attraction around the world. Here the Asplund collection is mixed with items from emerging designers and esteemed brands such as B&B Italia, Cappellini, Flos, Living Divani and Artemide.

The Asplund collection has grown significantly and is sold worldwide through a dealer network . There is a trend of outsourcing furniture brands among furniture brands, but Asplund is determined to keep most of its production in Sweden. Michael Asplund explains: “We manufacture all our furniture in Sweden, and a large proportion of our accessories. In this way, we benefit from the Swedish furniture industry while ensuring ethical and environmentally friendly production processes. Our carpets have been produced in India for 20 years, mainly because there is currently no equivalent to carpet production in Sweden. "

In recent years, we have focused on new energies, influences, materials and techniques. Taking natural elements in combination with new finishes as the main inspiration. Natural materials feel alive and gracefully change over time. By combining contrasting natural materials such as stone, metal and glass, you can get a very different look with the same design.
