Product description
The Chinese concept of "jian" can be translated as "break" or "interval", but it is also a unitary word for "peace". Thus, in an architectural sense, the term can be understood as a threshold state - a physical mediation between two contrasting spatial environments, such as interior and exterior, or public and private - but it also means that the threshold is not a passive mechanism, having the potential to actively change configuration and spatial relations. As such, a spatial threshold can have a huge impact on scale, accessibility and sense of intimacy. To design the "Threshold" screen series, Neri&Hu proposes a free-standing partition that plays with structure, materiality and dimensionality. Filled with various materials such as mirror, rattan and corrugated glass, the screen works great as a layer of privacy, but its functionality goes far beyond that. The bold lines that make up the frame may seem quite simple when viewed as a facade, but in fact they begin to project forward as volumes, giving additional purpose in the form of a drawer or desk. Three-dimensionality not only gives an object utility, but is also essential to its structural integrity.
