Product description

The DW 01 stool is the first product that we prototyped as part of the DW collection. Derek Welsh visited our workshop in February 2020 and spent several days learning about the skills and methods of our carpenters.
The design of the stool uses simple and strong construction methods, relying on traditional joinery that was used before advanced technology common in woodworking. An example of this is the intentionally exposed joinery, where the legs meet the bottom of the seat rather than completely cutting the cylindrical tenons to the bottom. This is a detail typical of traditional woodworking and can be seen in several 19th and early 20th century examples, including a rare 1910 Charles Rennie Mackintosh chair. Mackintosh coincidentally came from Glasgow, the Welsh city where he lives and works. Another example of a classic woodworking technique is to insert a wedge into the cylindrical tenons at the top of the seat to provide a better fit. This is visible in the center of the four circular patterns on the stool seat, especially in the Natural Teak finish version.
The multi-functional stool is perfect for sitting at a table or as a side table. It is solid, compact and especially suitable for small spaces and city apartments.
Finishes:
We offer this product in natural teak, black and blue. For the Natural Teak finish, the wood is sanded smooth and a soft cloth is applied with a clear polishing compound and sealer to bring out the natural golden brown color of the teak. In the case of Black Finish, the wood is sprayed with an ecological water-based paint that leaves visible grain and patterns. The Derek Welsh Collection (DWC) will be an ongoing series of handcrafted, fine wooden objects, created using classic woodworking techniques. The collection celebrates Welsh's expertise in traditional joinery and passion for clean, practical design. The first product from the collection is the DW 01 stool, which will soon be joined by a shelf and a chair.
