Product description
Mercury is an armchair whose main structure is made of solid wood and plywood. Seat equipped with elastic spring belts. Filling with polyurethane foams of various densities and acrylic fiber. The base consists of a five-pointed black steel star and solid wood legs with brass tips lacquered in any color with a choice of polished metal finish. Elastic fabric is recommended for upholstery. Mercury, the armchair and sofa model designed by sculptor Rito Valla in 1961 for IPE, returns in the Visionnaire limited edition. Mercury was presented in two versions of a sofa and an armchair in 1961 during the first edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milan by IPE, a company founded in 1959 in Bologna by the brothers Pompeo and Vittorio Cavalli. Immediately recognized as an experimental company, it was the first to interpret a revolutionary system involving the use of polyethers molded around light metal mesh structures as a substitute for kapok, horsehair, springs, elastic cords and nails in the production of padded furniture. The company managed to adapt this engineering and new construction method to soft and rounded shapes that were previously impossible to achieve, perfectly embodied by the Mercury, the first example of this approach. Due to this unique feature, the few original copies preserved to this day have a very high technical and economic value. The contemporary style of the model then designed by sculptor Rito Valla convinced Visionnaire - a brand founded in 2004 as a spin-off of IPE that has become a reference point for a meta-luxury lifestyle - to relaunch the model with current polyethers and put them back on the market.
"Visionnaire products," explains artistic director Eleonore Cavalli, granddaughter of the IPE founders, "combine craftsmanship and exclusivity, becoming one-off or very limited collector's items." In recent years, our brand has increasingly focused on experimenting with the relationship between art and design and offering desirable products. Reviving the legendary model designed by Professor Rito Valla seemed to us a natural step, fully in line with the brand's creative direction. Our partnership with 1stDibs allows us to be part of the leading market for luxury collectible furniture.”
