In collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archive and the heirs of the famous Milanese architect, Molteni&C reconstructs one of Gio Ponti's rare pieces of furniture designed for outdoor use: the design of the D.150.5 chaise longue for the cruise ship Andrea Doria from 1952.
This edition is a tribute to the work Ponti for Andrea Doria, where, thanks to his versatile creativity, he was able to create unique environments. The "dreamed" and designed by Ponti chaise longue is an important representative of this performance which envisages, taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the unconventional surroundings of the ship, precisely the continuous and modifiable spaces of its architecture of later years, where the furnishings participate in the domestic theater without constructing permanent decorations, as could this is the case with living room or bedroom furniture, but rather responding and representing in its design the comfort and needs of those who will use it.
Synthesis of values which comes down to aesthetics, as Ponti teaches.
The contours of our chaise longue are characterized by two distinctive features: the first is the continuous line of the side structure, which connects the different parts (backrest, seat, armrest, footrest) in one stroke, marking the elongated profile of the armchair according to the Ponti principle.
The second detail is the radius of the angle between the seat and the backrest, which is identical to that precisely given by Ponti in the Distex '53 design notes, now issued by Molteni&C as D.153.1. The use of solid teak highlights the manufacturing advantages of high-quality cabinet manufacturing.
