The iconic Bul-bo lamp, designed between 1968 and 1971 by Roberto Gabetti, Aimaro Isola, Guido Drocco and Luciano Refor for the Olivetti Residential Center in Ivrea, is now represented again by Axolight.
In 1968 - when one of the most destructive mass movements of the 20th century were born in cities around the world, and rural landscapes definitely gave way to the aesthetic influence of factories - the Gabetti i Isola studio started the construction project Olivetti Residential Center in Ivrea, giving life to innovative housing solutions (designed for the employees of Olivetti, one of the most important companies in the world in the 20th century) whose legacy is the idea of a new way of living space.
The interior of the building, which consists of 82 apartments with a set of functional, modular and fun furniture, was designed to provide guests of the facility with perfect psychophysical comfort .
This is how the Bul-Bo lamp was born, a luminous flag around which various pieces of equipment and accessories are arranged - no longer attached to the walls, as traditionally, but free in space - designed and built by Gabetti and Isola especially for buildings residential. The guests of the residence, with the exception of Bul-Bo, could choose their equipment from the studio's various offers.
Bul-Bo was and remains an object of a break with the past. This lamp was designed to help create a living environment inspired by Schiller's work: fun, casual and focused on providing guests with psychophysical well-being.
This floor lamp takes its name from the base, or rather the bulb, made of artificial leather material (from first edition) and filled inside with marble granulate, which serves as a counterweight and at the same time supports the aluminum shaft with a metal bulb shape at the end. A lamp with an extremely innovative design that can change its position with changing inclinations, taking on a new identity and maintaining the ironic and empathetic look that distinguished all the furnishings of the Olivetti Residential Center. The decidedly discordant and revolutionary design experience of Gabetti and Isola for Olivetti has left an indelible mark on the custom, thus attracting the interest of a large audience of collectors who still compete to purchase Bul-Bo and other works of the studio at design and modernization auctions.
