A valance is a thick strip of tape sewn to the top of curtains to hold them together, and to which curtain hooks can be attached.
In this pendant lamp by Marie Christine Dorner, the high valance is wrapped around the curtain around the outer edges of the widest part of the lampshade, and it is through pleating cotton calico allows regular pleats to be arranged on its two slopes. A classic technique for a contemporary and very charming design.
