Inspired by the furniture of architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Mart Stam, as well as the possibilities offered by tubular steel as a material, Thonet developed a number of his own designs starting in the 1920s, mainly side furniture, which were largely published in catalog 1930/31. The B 22 shelf is one of such elements.
