It started with an impression reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich, if not set in modernity: the young Dutchman Joop Couwenberg watched fishermen fishing out garbage from the sea. Countless tons of recyclable materials collected to be processed, compressed and formed into new forms. He was impressed by the idea of extending product life cycles and used it as the guiding idea for his new object: the cantilever stool.
The material that the industrial designer and Eindhoven University of Technology graduate chose was not plastic, but soft, warm cork, which usually tops wine bottles as a closure. Couwenberg collected corks, during his research he founded a social institution in Belgium that shredded the material and began experimenting.
For the curved steel tube frame, Couwenberg, who set up his studio in Tilburg, the Netherlands in 2014, followed a functional approach to the Bauhaus. He was fascinated by an idea that had already captivated designers from Mart Stam to Marcel Breuer: the idea of floating on water, which was combined with the contrast of rigid seats and resulted in an oscillating piece of furniture: the cantilever chair.
In the triangular shape of the steel frame, he consciously followed the idea that furniture should be stackable and at the same time take into account healthy sitting.
