Uec Kesa is an armchair available in a range of fabric colors, designed and manufactured by fabric designer Padmaja Krishnan. The fabric used in this chair is recycled "patchwork textile material" - created as a result of an intensive process of collecting discarded fabric scraps, arranging them into specific patterns and sewing them piece by piece by hand and then by machine. The process of sewing and producing enough fabric for a single chair takes several weeks and is done entirely by craftswomen in Padmaja's workshop in Mumbai. Each chair we create in this collection will be truly unique, even though it belongs to a specific "colorway" created by Padmaj.
The blue-gray colorway seen in the image above is the first to be launched and we plan to add more colors to the collection soon .
A special wood finish called P1 was developed to complement the "patchwork" aesthetic of the Padmaja collection. The P1 wood finish is achieved by a process that involves hand applying layers of black stain to the wood, lightly brushing with a steel brush and applying a final coat of hard wax oil. Padmaja Krishnan is a textile designer based in Mumbai. Padmaja's KeSa collection continues the exploration of handcrafted Indian upholstery textiles and the use of recycled materials in products manufactured by Phantom Hands. The collection will start with upholstered chairs and include seat cushions and other products.
KeSa refers to single-layer garments sewn by Buddhist monks from rags and discarded clothes. It comes from the Sanskrit word Kāsaya, which referred to the dark brown or saffron color of these clothes. By redefining what is useless and discarded, choosing slow and not fully controllable techniques and finding consequences in defects, Padmaja tries to break the boredom of mass production and create textiles that can be called classic and modern at the same time. He follows the native tradition of respecting things instead of wanting more. Inspired by traditional KeSa, these textiles are created through an intensive process of collecting discarded fabric scraps, carefully arranging them, sewing them piece by piece by hand and then sewing them by machine. These fabrics are an ode to the transience of things, the passage of time and a kind of rustic beauty - the fact that imperfect and aged objects are often the most beautiful.
Products from the KeSa Collection are available in a set of fabrics 'colors' designed and produced by a textile designer Padmaja Krishnan.

A specially designed cushion is optionally available for each seat model from the KeSa Collection. The pillow was designed with ergonomics in mind and is called the "Manju" pillow.
The colors of the fabrics in the KeSa collection are complemented by a special, hand-dyed material developed by Phantom Hands.
