It is not always necessary to develop new products in the world of seating furniture. Sometimes it's enough to change an existing design, for example the Shrimp armchair from 2011. “When we look at older designs, we always ask ourselves if we would do it the same way today,” explained design duo Jehs+Laub, adding: “We wouldn't change anything about the shell of the Shrimp seat because the fact that it's made from a single piece of wood makes it iconic and unique. However, we do not believe that the seating core reflects modern tastes.” This prompted us to design a new seat cushion with additional volume. It provides a harmonious contrast with the hardwood and the technology used to form the shell. A slightly larger, soft cushion is loose in the shell to form an armrest and a slightly higher backrest, providing support and extra comfort.
The only thing that hasn't changed is the iconic Shrimp chair shell. The chair owes its typical silhouette to a flexible shell made of bent wood with side recesses that give it the appearance of a crustacean, hence the name. Shrimps delight both aesthetically and functionally. The shell is made of reinforced bent wood veneered with oak or walnut or varnished, and the soft fabric or leather cushion creates a beautiful contrast, emphasizing the character of the Shrimp armchair. Although it was a big challenge, we managed to maintain the synchrony of the side cavities. The cut and filling of the pillow are adjusted to precisely fit the side recesses of the shell.
