The door to the archives of Pio Manzù's works opens again for Alias, who, after the Manzù armchair, now brings to life another historic project of the brilliant hero of Italian car design of the 1960s.
This journey into design culture gave Alias the opportunity to discover a deep-rooted kinship with the historical figure Pio Manzù. One of the first designers to understand the human-machine relationship beyond mere functional requirements, taking into account aspects such as safety and well-being. Manzù's uncompromising approach to design and knowledge of technology have made him a true pioneer in the field of ergonomics.
This time the spotlight is on a table designed for the Agnelli house in Rome: Manzù imagined a tabletop mounted on a central support attached to the floor. With the slenderness typical of Eero Saarinen's designs and Pierre Chareau's resourcefulness, he designed a base with a sculptural quality that supports a circular tabletop, the center of which faces the outer crown on which people sit, to ensure it serves everyone more efficiently.
The table with a central leg by Pio Manzù was created by rotating the profile around the central axis. Archival drawings show how the profile was designed according to different geometric profiles, which generated a series of shapes with different stresses.
Alias decided to take a closer look at the version with a symmetrical leg and a solid central column.

The table structure, made of compact polyurethane painted in various colors, supports a round top available in three sizes (diameters 140, 160 and 180 cm).
In line with the philosophy that inspired the original design, Alias has developed a top composed of two elements: a central circle, proposed in stove-enameled, anodized or marble veneered aluminum, rotating relative to the crown, made of painted MDF board, meeting a variety of requirements functional related to contemporary life.
The table reflects the ability of the historic Italian design brand to select an object from the past with enormous innovative potential and transfer it to today's world with just a few touches, making it extremely current.
