Product description
With undoubtedly precise, handcrafted details, the upholstered molded wood shell sits on a shiny chrome aluminum base in the Constanze 3/4 armchair. An additional molded wood shell gives the masterfully deep seat element additional stability. The positioning of the legs breaks the compactness of the solid upholstered element - reflecting the lightness that Spalt wanted to achieve. The armrests give the furniture a characteristic form. A footstool cut from the same material and a table complete the group.
For Wittmann, Johannes Spalt was an integral part of a company that broke new ground – and is among the most striking figures of Austrian architecture. In 1952, together with Otto Leitner, Wilhelm Holzbauer and Friedrich Kurrent, he founded Arbeitsgruppe 4 (Working Group 4). The group created pioneering projects that provided a key impetus for the following decades.
1960 was the year of Spalt's "3/4 Möbel", his first project with Wittmann. It consisted of an armchair, a footstool and a side table. The name comes from the nickname given to his Arbeitsgruppe 4. After Otto Leitner's departure, they became affectionately known as "die 3/4-ler" (the three quarters). In 1961, the Constanze bench appeared, which, using a specially developed mechanism, could be transformed from a seat into a bed.
Today, the lines, function and style of 3/4 furniture still seem modern and in touch with the times. This is reason enough for Wittmann to let them shine in the context of timeless design, introducing them here and now with a subtle update.
Spalt wanted to create "intelligent furniture that will enable the cultivation of interior culture." Wittmann's goal is to use the new edition of 3/4 furniture to give this philosophy a lasting impact.
