Contessa 1956 is a truly original armchair. More than 60 years after its development, Wittmann resurrected this iconic design.

“Swinging home Comfort”: this advertising slogan from the 1950s comes from an optimistic attitude, which was also reflected in the design of the time. Contemporary, too harmonious and strictly coordinated, simple interiors unfortunately lack the optimistic mood and optimism of the era. For Wittmann it was a great opportunity to breathe fresh life into a classic: the contemporary Contessa armchair with a wingback.
The original was the first modern piece of furniture produced by Wittmann after the war: a "sports piece" with a sharply cut back and heavily upholstered like a car seat sports. Although the wings and armrests have been reduced to a minimum, it still exudes a comfort unlike any of the austere Bauhaus classics. The precision of the organically flowing lines is emphasized by the leather trim available in eight different colors. Meanwhile, the conical, diagonal legs give the chair character and give it a certain agility.
The manufacturer's entire experience over the last 60 years - as well as state-of-the-art technology and materials - have been used to develop this contemporary re-edition. Never before has a 1950s classic been so comfortable: seating comfort depends on the integrated, ultra-flat mat with pocket springs, the seat on a crossed elastic band and the ergonomically cushioned tubular steel frame that is light years ahead of its predecessors 60 plus years ago. Unlike similar organically shaped armchairs, the cover is not simply glued to the curved seat; instead, it is hand-upholstered using traditional methods. The exacting standards of craftsmanship can be seen in a variety of details, including the use of a variety of sewing techniques: twin needle quilting, drop stitching, and staggered stitching to provide excellent elasticity and firmness exactly where you need it.
