Remnant represents material that the sculptor may have discarded after creating Core, a different but complementary interpretation of the same form.
The technical complexity of the product was one of the main challenges of this project. Its visual lightness and apparent simplicity are the result of a significant amount of development, experimentation and engineering. The essence of this design is characterized by a perfect combination of industrial curiosity in the search for new structural forms, the warmth provided by the craftsmanship of the upholsterer, the elegance of the design and its impeccable details.
The subtle and elegant quilting surrounding both the armchair and the sofa adds texture to the iconic design that can be upholstered in a wide range of fabrics.
Remnant's visual simplicity represents a complex engineering feat. The Sancal technical office had to find a way to support the seat while it was floating in the air. A process of trial and error until we found the solution: a triangulated metal structure inspired by architectural weight distribution techniques. “We have moved on to the prototyping stage to test the design feasibility of this hypothesis. Developing multiple iterations, each an improvement on the last, we tested different thicknesses of the internal structure and strengthened the softest points until we achieved the solidity, stability and comfort that this design required.”
Another design problem was the large amount of leftovers. In this case, the solution was to divide the structure to facilitate the injection process. For example, the internal structure of the armchair consists of three parts made of different molds, while the sofa is made of four. The combination of all these elements was also successful. In addition to ensuring durability, we wanted them to be unnoticeable.
