Product description
Gengè is a wall sculpture in solid wood, available in 2 variants.
“Because reality was not given to us and does not exist; but if we want, we have to do it ourselves; and it will never be one for all time, but constant and infinitely changing.” Luigi Pirandello – One, Nobody and One Hundred Thousand. Thanks to a particular intertwining of viewpoints, when looking at Gengè - a furniture accessory designed by Matteo Vilardo and Marcello Marino per MEDULUM - one can closely examine its image when viewed from the right angle, while those looking from the outside will still see only the mask created by the object. A collection of non-mirrors - at the same time extremely unusual, impressive and at the same time minimalist - which makes the observer reflect on the topic of identity in contemporary society, stimulating him to constantly search for masks that overlap us and reality. In this way, the eternal and extremely important topic of the double is reinterpreted using the tools of design: who we really are and what others see about us.
A collection of non-mirrors whose aim is to lead the observer to explore - in a modern way, and at the same time free from any form of virtuality - the ancient theme of identity and its double; using a mask as a shape, a mirror as an instrument and a wooden diaphragm as an optical medium.
The designers' tribute to the Italian writer Pirandello and the hero of his novel Uno, nessuno e centomila (One, not a Hundred Thousand), Gengè also indirectly represents the tribute to his common Sicilian origin.
