Product description
This ceramic vase is one of two inspired by the Finnish Spring Festival. In April, Finnish children welcome the end of winter by dressing up as witches and decorating willow branches with feathers and small decorations. Going from door to door, little witches expect small treats in exchange for blessings. Wishing their neighbors a healthy year, they say: “Virvon, varvon, tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks; vitsa sulle, palkka mulle.” Or: “I wave a branch to keep the coming year fresh and healthy; a twig for you, a treat for me!” This witch is accompanied by a dog familiar, an Easter dog vase. The Easter Witch Vase belongs to a family of seven handmade ceramic objects created by COMPANY for the FIN/JPN Friendship collection by Artek. What gifts did the Finnish delegation to Japan bring to Japan in 1919 to inaugurate Finnish-Japanese diplomatic relations? With this in mind, Finnish-Korean design duo COMPANY created their contribution to the FIN/JPN friendship collection. The family of six ceramic objects is both decorative and functional; everyone performs a seasonal ritual belonging to the Finnish calendar. Expressive and disarmingly naive, the family of objects evokes Finland's animistic, pagan past. They are handcrafted by ceramic partner Artek in Portugal, based on a process of close collaboration with COMPANY's founders, Aamu Song and Johan Olin.
