The second generation Solar Tree is conceived as a lighting device combining LED-based lighting technology with photovoltaic technology in a very unique and innovative design. The design aims, on the one hand, to minimize the impact of product use on the environment, while ensuring that the device will be able to ensure continuity of operation and therefore the expected light output, without exposure to accidental atmospheric factors or structural imbalance (number of panels, battery size ) calculated for the winter months. This imbalance entails significant size, weight and cost and would not ensure continuous operation in unusual weather conditions. The same logical principles applied in the automotive sector to electric cars were applied, with hybrid versions overtaking all-electric battery-based versions for a number of reasons such as cost, efficiency and the state of certain technologies, to develop Artemida's Solar Tree project. With a mixed battery/solar and grid configuration, it provides the best possible combination of energy savings and functionality. Solar Tree has been designed to work in a HYBRID configuration: in addition to batteries, usually with appropriate capacity, which can hold energy for autonomous operation for up to 7-10 days when fully charged, a connection to the network is provided to power devices when the batteries run out . This is to ensure full availability of services even in the event of persistent bad weather conditions and/or reduced sunlight, 100% utilization of the device's light output or in any case when the energy balance is negative. At dusk (recognized by determining the time of dawn and sunset entered into the calculation procedure of the management program or in another way), the LED sources are turned on until dawn in accordance with the set work factor. In "HYBRID" devices, the system draws energy from the batteries until they reach the lower charge limit, then automatically switches to the network. For devices based on this configuration, if the connection to the mains coincided with the desired switching time of the public lighting devices to which the Solar Tree functionally refers, appropriate settings will ensure that the voltage available at power-up will be interpreted as the Solar Tree start signal and vice versa in case of disconnection from the network.
