Cachalot is a portable acrylic resin lamp designed by Yoshiki Matsuyama, whose name and shape refers to an animal.
A light that gently harmonizes with the heart in a dark, lonely space at night. When I imagined such light, I thought of a single whale swimming slowly through the ocean. The presence of even one whale can bring peace and warmth to your heart and slow down the passage of time, even in a dark, cold ocean surrounded by silence. This lighting object embodies such elements of life. By combining the soft light created by precision metalworking with the expansive yet soft line created by the sculptural silhouette, it gently floats in the night space as a quiet and peaceful light.
The Cachalot light source is composed of extremely fine details made possible by precision metalworking. The rod, which emits a warm light as if symbolizing life, is like a filament with a modern interpretation, but designed to radiate warmth, making it not too bright and suitable for the dining room and working environment. Each element of the light source, from the cable connecting the LEDs to the mounting screws, is positioned as a design element, creating an exquisite detail reminiscent of a vintage sailing ship model. The light creates a contrasting effect with the smooth silhouette of the lampshade, while harmonizing as a single light object, bringing a delicate and soft light to the space. “Animals”, a nature theme, have been quoted in many ways since ancient times to add color to people's lives. During the day, Cachalot's sculptural form will become a transparent, calming object in the natural light that casts a pale shadow outside the window. We did not try to faithfully recreate the animal's body, we did not try to deform it in a nice way or recreate its character. The aim was to express the essence of its form in the simplest way possible, so that it functions as a soft light that can act as an accent in environments such as the living room, bedroom and study. Placed on a windowsill, shelf or table, it will enrich the living environment, combining well with other objects such as books and flowers.
