Gerrit Rietveld was a pioneer of modernism and established the first lasting accents of the new era with his "Red and Blue Chair" and the L40 hanging lamp - even before the founding of the Bauhaus. Marcel Breuer, for example, initially believed that Rietveld had a significant influence on him, before breaking free from his role model with his epochal tubular steel furniture. The L40 lamp was used in 1922 in the furnishings of the progressive doctor Hartog's office.
The pioneering and, by the standards of the time, extremely bold Rietveld ceiling lamp consisted only of bare ceiling pipes suspended on its own power cable.
